TGS with a special focus on Green Energy Compliance, ISO 20121 – Sustainable Event Management and Green Key Certification, aims to educate and inspire stakeholders in Nigeria to adopt sustainable event management practices and green certifications, thereby fostering Investment, eco-friendliness and sustainable approach to event planning, tourism and hospitality.

The symposium typically aims to drive the following key initiatives:
- Sustainable Event Planning: How to organize and execute events with minimal environmental impact.
- Waste Reduction and Management: Best practices for reducing, reusing, and recycling event materials and waste.
- Eco-friendly Venues and Locations: Identifying and utilizing venues that prioritize sustainability and environmentally conscious practices.
- Energy Efficiency and Carbon Footprint Reduction: How to minimize the energy usage of events and reduce their carbon footprint, such as through the use of renewable energy sources.
- Sustainable Catering and Food Waste Management: Strategies for reducing food waste and sourcing local, organic, or plant-based foods.
- Green Certifications and Standards: Understanding the certifications and standards available for sustainable event planning, such as ISO 20121 (sustainable event management) or Green Key certification.
- Transportation and Travel: Minimizing the environmental impact of travel to and from the event, often through carpooling, public transportation, or encouraging virtual attendance.
These are the strategic objectives
- Educate Stakeholders: Introduce ISO 20121 and Green Key Certification to Lagos’ events and hospitality ecosystem by raising awareness about the importance of sustainable event management practices.
- Promote Certification Adoption: Encourage multi-ministerial collaboration to embed sustainability into regulations, planning and operations of event venues, event planners, and hospitality providers to ensure they pursue Green Key and ISO 20121 certifications.
- Foster Collaboration: Bring together key players from the government, NGOs, corporate sponsors, international agencies and the events industry to create partnerships for a sustainable future.
- Empower Organizations in Lagos: Equip local organizations with the knowledge and tools needed to transition towards greener practices and obtain internationally recognized certifications.
- Encourage International Best Practice: Attract local and international investment in Lagos’ green tourism and clean energy infrastructure by aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015, specifically Goals 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and 13 (Climate Action).
- Inspire Green Energy Compliance: To drive the initiative for events in Lagos to be 30% Green energy compliant.
- Policy Development Framework: Develop a sustainability policy framework for government and private event organizers by Instigating conversations that will lead to creations of policies governing green practice implementation.
